چکیده

ζ-potentials of entities such as cells and synaptosomes have been determined, but ζ of brain tissue has never been measured. Electroosmotic flow, and the resulting transport of neuroactive substances, would result from naturally occurring and experimentally or clinically induced electric fields if ζ is significant. We have developed a simple method for determining ζ in tissue. An electric field applied across a rat organotypic hippocampal slice culture (OHSC) drives fluorescent molecules through the tissue by both electroosmotic flow and electrophoresis. Fluorescence microscopy is used to determine each molecule's velocity. Independently, capillary electrophoresis is used to measure the molecule’s electrophoretic mobilities. The experiment yields ζ-potential and average tissue tortuosity. The ζ-potential of OHSCs is –22 ± 2 mV and the average tortuosity is 1.83 ± 0.06. In a refined experiment, ζ-potential is measured in various subregions. The ζ-potentials of the CA1 stratum pyramidale, CA3 stratum pyramidal and dentate gyrus are -25.1 ± 1.6 mV, -20.3 ± 1.7 mV and -25.4 ± 1.0 mV respectively. Simple dimensional

Time-periodic Electroosmotic Flow of Non-newtonian Fluids in Microchannels

The alternating current electroosmotic flow of a non-Newtonian power-law fluid is studied in a circular microchannel. A numerical method is employed to solve the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann and the momentum equations. The main parameters which affect the flow field are the flow behavior index, the dimensionless zeta potential and the dimensionless frequency. At very low dimensionless frequenci...

Cytoplasmic Electric Fields and Electroosmosis: Possible Solution for the Paradoxes of the Intracellular Transport of Biomolecules

The objective of the paper is to show that electroosmotic flow might play an important role in the intracellular transport of biomolecules. The paper presents two mathematical models describing the role of electroosmosis in the transport of the negatively charged messenger proteins to the negatively charged nucleus and in the recovery of the fluorescence after photobleaching. The parameters of ...

Studying the effects of pH and molecular charge on the passive and iontophoretic permeation of L-phenylalanine through cellulose acetate membrane

Iontophoresis is one of the skin permeation enhancement methods involving the transport of drugs through the skin under the effect of electrical current. The effect of molecular charge on the iontophoretic permeation of drugs has not been completely understood yet. Therefore the effect of passive and iontophoretic permeation of L-phenylalanine at pH 3.6 (positive charge) and pH 8 (negative ch...
